Finnish investments in Russian forest industry approaches Euro 1 billion

Finland is anxious with plans of Russia to increase export duties on unprocessed lumber and hopes that realization of this plan won’t prevent to continue deliveries of forest products in Finland, Finnish prime-minister Matti Vanhanen said during press-conference after Russian-Finnish negotiations.
According to Vanhanen, great attention was paid to this subject in the course of negotiations between Matti Vanhanen and Russian prime-minister Mickhail Fradkov, which took place on November 29, 2006.
“I expressed profound concern with plans of Russian part to increase duties”, head of Finnish government said. He added that such decision affects the interests of Finnish wood-processing enterprises, located in the Eastern Finland. “We expect that in future, planning its movement, Russia will take such decisions which will allow to continue deliveries”.
Vanhanen added that at the same time Finnish timber processors are ready to keep increasing investments in Russian forest industry. At present volume of Finnish investments in Russian forest industry approaches Euro 1 billion.
Fradkov added that, in his opinion, conditions to be created in forest industry will promote attracting of Finnish investments in timber processing in Russia, which will allow to resolve assigned task on creation of further timber processing in Russia.
He also added that adoption of new Forest Code should contribute to rise of investment attraction of the industry and development of investment cooperation.
