Georgia-Pacific Corp. in Mount Hope is temporarily laying off 70 of its 113 employees, informed Lesprom Network according to Register-Herald Reporter. “This is a temporary curtailment of our plant operations in Mount Hope,” said Melodie Ruse, the company spokesperson. The 70 employees comprise the plant’s entire production staff, she said. Ruse said maintenance employees will not be laid off during the temporary period. “We are expecting operations at the plant in Mount Hope to be down for a few months,” she said. Ruse said the layoffs are effective immediately and cited the economic downturn in the housing market as the reason for the action. “The housing market in the last few years has adversely affected all of our operations worldwide,” she said. “We are evaluating all of our operations and our plants across the world could be impacted.” Georgia-Pacific has 45,000 employees worldwide.
