Indonesian plywood exports down 11% in January - October
Dec 06, 2010. Exports of Indonesian plywood continue to decline over recent months due to difficult conditions in the main markets for Indonesian plywood, namely Japan, the US and the Middle-East. The volume of plywood exports from January to October this year amounted only to 1.9 million cubic metres, down 11% from 2.1 million cubic metres registered in the same period in 2009.
Dec 06, 2010. /Lesprom Network/.
However, in value terms exports increased by 2.2% to $866 million compared to $847 million for the same period in 2009, ITTO reported.
The decline in exports is attributed to the strengthening of the Indonesian Rupiah against the US dollar, which has the effect of making Indonesian products more expensive and less competitive in the international markets. The appreciation of the Indonesian Rupiah has also eroded the profit margins of plywood producers.
