Japan lends Peru $120 million to protect rainforests
May 14, 2009. The government of Japan has granted Peru a loan of $120 million that will be destined for a rainforests' conservation program. The credit, that has an annual interest of 0.10% and will have to be paid in 40 years, will allow Peru to preserve 55 million hectares of primary rainforests of the Amazonia during the next 10 years.
May 14, 2009. /Lesprom Network/. The government of Japan has granted Peru a loan of $120 million that will be destined for a rainforests' conservation program, said Antonio Brack, Peru's Minister of Environment, as news portal Living in Peru informed Lesprom Network.
The credit, that has an annual interest of 0.10% and will have to be paid in 40 years, will allow Peru to preserve 55 million hectares of primary rainforests of the Amazonia during the next 10 years. Antonio Brack said that the low-interest loan would be disbursed in 3 stages, with the first payment to be made next year.
The areas that will benefit from this project are protected natural areas, the forests belonging to Amazonic indigenous communities, and the ones destined for forest reserves, conservation and ecotourism.
