Plywood imports rose slightly to 447 791 cubic meters worth JPY 30.3 billion ($254.1 million) in January 2007, up 0.3% (up 51% in value) from a year earlier, ITTO reported. However, the expansion of plywood imports has slowed down in early 2007 due to large import volumes during the second half of 2006. By import source, 227 000 cubic meters came from Malaysia (down 8.3% and the first annual reduction in six months), 145 000 cubic meters from Indonesia (up 2%) and 63 000 cubic meters from China (up 29%). By wood species, imports of hardwood plywood fell 8% to 334 000 cubic meters while those of softwood plywood surged 155.5% to 8 000 cubic meters.
