Jun 21, 2005. /Lesprom Network/. Kruger Inc. announced that it had ceased all activities on Île René-Levasseur, following a safeguard order granted to the Betsiamites Innu by the Quebec Superior Court on June 17. Activities has ceased until judgment upon the merits of the request for interlocutory injunction would be rendered. The Court considered that “the attorney-general of Quebec violated his constitutional obligation to consult the Betsiamites Innu beforehand and to accommodate them with regard to their ancestral rights and their Indian title claims prior to granting or renewing the TSFMAs P-2 or granting Kruger any other form of forest harvesting authorization in Common Area 093-20.” The safeguard order awarded to the Betsiamites Innu represents a net loss of 38% in wood supplies for Kruger Inc. from Common Area 093-20 and will directly affect operations at company’s three North Shore sawmills, Scierie Manic in Ragueneau, Scierie HCN in Forestville and the Longue-Rive dressing and drying mill,” declared Kruger Inc. vice president of corporate affairs, Mr. Jean Majeau. In the Mauricie, this decision represents a 27%-reduction in wood chip supplies for the Kruger Wayagamack mill. Kruger Inc. has pointed out that its forest practices are exemplary and comply with all sustainable development requirements. The company protects biodiversity and exceptional forest ecosystems; its practices are certified by outside experts. In addition, Kruger Inc. voluntarily contributed to doubling the size of the protected areas on Île René-Levasseur, bringing it close to 25%. Finally, some twenty regional organizations collaborate with Kruger in planning forest activities.
