May 13, 2005. /Lesprom Network/. The management of Norampac Inc. announces the closing of its Montreal corrugated products plant, located on Molson Street, during the second quarter of 2006. This closure is part of a global reorganization plan of Norampac’s Quebec activities, which includes an investment plan totalling close to $30 million. The closure of the Montreal division will affect some 215 employees and had become necessary in an effort to adjust to the Quebec marketplace, since Norampac is not immune to the problems currently affecting the pulp and paper industry. The decision to close the Montreal division was based mainly on this plant’s limited expansion potential. Norampac Inc. will develop a relocation program to ensure that the highest number of employees possible is given the opportunity to find employment within one of its divisions and thus minimize the number of layoffs. “This decision will enable Norampac to maintain its leadership position within the industry. We will thus be able to reduce our costs and optimize the operations of our corrugated product plants in Quebec while continuing to provide premium-quality products and top-notch service to our clientele. We will take all necessary steps to minimize the negative impacts of this reorganization on our employees,” explained Marc-Andre Depin, President and CEO of Norampac Inc.
