Nov 26, 2008. /Lesprom.com/. The North American newsprint market continued its sharp decline in October, with total U.S. consumption down 18.2% year-to-year and U.S. dailies newspapers' consumption down 18.3% for the month, Montreal Gazette reported. This implies more mill downtime ahead for producers, analysts said. With two $20 a tonne price increases posted for the year's final two months, list prices in the East - the prices offered at a discount to big users - are due to hit $775, they said. But Western producers are holding list prices at $750 a tonne. The drop in the Canadian dollar is helping Canadian producers' top line, they added, but will gradually put downward pressure on newsprint selling prices.
