Jun 17, 2005. /Lesprom Network/. Russia is suggesting that unique rules for forest industry be worked out, head of the Federal Timber Sector Agency Valeri Roshupkin said. According to Valeri Roshupkin, illegal logging is becoming a serious threat that cannot be treated without international cooperation in the field. ‘Unfortunately the understanding of what we call ‘illegal logging’ and ‘illegal timber turnover’ differs from country to country’ Valeri Roshupkin said. ‘When we talk about designing international ways to combat illegal logging, we mean that both countries – the exporting and the importing ones are both responsible.’ According to Valeri Roshupkin, the agency suggests designing common terminology and classification and general principles of responsibility in this respect. ‘The Declaration shoud be signed by 56 countries and a plan of activities will be worked out’, he said. Roshupkin said that the following decision may be taken this year.
