Nov 07, 2008. /Lesprom.com/. Smurfit-Stone Container Corp. is closing its Fresno corrugated sheet plant this month, eliminating the jobs of 114 workers, Central Valley Business Times reported.
Some of the 114 are salaried workers and some of those may be absorbed into other operations, says Tim Rowden, a company spokesman.
Mr. Rowden says the plant being closed makes the corrugated board used to make boxes. Untouched is a more modern plant nearby acquired in July from Calpine Corrugated LLC, an independent corrugated container producer in Fresno.
That plant was designed specifically for the California produce market and is state-of-the-art, Mr. Rowden says. The former Calpine plant can handle what was being made in the plant to be closed.
"As we establish one of the most modern converting systems in North America, the addition of Calpine Corrugated will significantly upgrade our West Coast production capabilities," said Patrick Moore, Smurfit-Stone Chairman and CEO.
