Nov 07, 2005. /Lesprom Network/. Finnish paper company UPM-Kymmene's (UPM) unit Walki Wisa said it will reduce shifts at its Pietarsaari mill, which could lead to 70 job cuts. Walki Wisa said it has started discussions with staff at the mill on how to reduce shifts from seven days a week to five at two production lines and one printing machine from November 28. The shift cuts, which will close down the machines over the weekends, are intended to adjust capacity to demand, Mats Holti, director of Walki Wisa's Finnish operations said. The mill's 10 other production lines are already operating a five-day week.
The negotiations could lead to redundancies of around 70 people, but the company said it hasn't yet decided exactly how these cuts would be made.
The Pietarsaari mill, on the West coast of Finland, produces wrapping products for industries such as the food and techno-chemicals and employs around 350 people. "The shifts could, however, be prolonged again to seven days-a-week if the market situation improves," Mr. Holti said.
UPM is one of the world's leading forest products companies. The company's businesses focus on magazine papers, newsprint, fine and speciality papers, converting materials and wood products.
