May 06, 2004. /Lesprom Network/. UPM closed paper machine-17 and the defibered paper production line on Voikkaa in the south of Finland. The defibered paper production line has the capacity of 130 thousand tons/yr, the production capacity of the paper machine (producing book paper and smooth paper) was 100 thousand tons/yr. UPM has been negotiating the sale of the machine with Filipino, but the negotiations broke down. The closure of the paper machine will result in the cut of 175 jobs, which is within the limits of the jobs cut of 1200 workers UPM intends to fulfill by the end of 2004.
