KYIV. Feb 18 (Interfax-Ukraine) - Ukrainian industrial production grew 1.7% year-on-year in January, but declined compared to the previous month, the State Statistics Committee reported. Production in January surged 48.3% year-on-year in oil refining, 32.1% for timber and wood products, 18.6% in the engineering sector, 10.9% in processing of agricultural products and 6% in generation and distribution of electricity. Output rose 1.6% year-on-year in manufacturing sectors, but slumped 3.2% in extractive industries, largely due to a 13.2% drop in metal ore mining. Production in the metallurgy sector fell 15.2%, as output dropped 16.6% for iron and steel, 23.3% for pipes, 20.3% for primary steel processing, and 3.1% for nonferrous metals. Output in the metalwork industry rose 5.1%. Ukrainian industrial production jumped 14.2% in 2001.
