Oct 06, 2008. /Lesprom.com/. Abitibi Bowater, which produces recycled newsprint, announced to its 480 employees that it plans to close its doors for the month of November due to market conditions,Niagara this week reported. Mike Lambert, Niagara's national representative for the Communications, Energy and Paperworks Union, said that there have been different discussions about the downsizing of the workforce. He said that recently the company said it would reduce its productivity by up to 35 thousand tonnes over the next three months. "We're disappointed," said Lambert. "But we understand it's the company's decision." Lambert also added that there have been enough shutdowns already in the industry. Some maintenance will be done during the month of November at Abitibi, but Lambert said that the company will likely be cutting jobs when the month-long shutdown is over. Lambert said the union is trying to work with the company to mitigate the layoffs.
