Sep 05, 2005. /Lesprom Network/. Estonian match factory AS Estonian Match will stop manufacturing matches in Estonia, buying them instead from India, a step which will allow substantial savings in labour and raw materials costs, the company's chief said.
"We will finish the manufacture of ordinary matches in Estonia and will start ordering them from India," the head of Estonian Match, Tarvo Moss said.
"Our labour costs went up 15% last year, and the raw material - aspen tree - is also becoming more expensive all the time," he said. Estonian Match will conclude a deal with Indian match factory Standard Match, based near Madras, to buy 80 million boxes of matches a year, Mr. Moss said. But the volume will go up soon as Estonian Match has already concluded agreements with foreign retail chains for the distribution of the Indian matches, he added. The main export destination of Estonian Match is Finland, where the company has 72% of the market, Mr. Moss said.
Estonian Match will not close its production facilities in Estonia but instead use them to make candles.
