Nov 28, 2012. /Lesprom Network/. SCA has through its tissue brand Velvet made a commitment to replace three trees for every one it uses. Now it has hit a major milestone and four million extra trees have been planted, as the company said in the press release received by Lesprom Network.
Velvet tissue is made up of fibers from hard and softwood trees. While most responsible tissue companies replace softwood trees on a three for one basis and hardwoods on a one for one basis, SCA and Velvet’s commitment means it also replaces hardwoods three for one as well.
To plant the extra trees, SCA and Velvet has teamed up with ethical forestry company Amata in Brazil to fund a massive initiative that plants and responsibly manages native Brazilian trees on land that was previously barren.
On reaching maturity, the trees are harvested and replaced, with the proceeds going to Amata, providing jobs and ensuring that trees are valued as a sustainable resource.
The Velvet Amata partnership is also responsible for protecting more than 15 million native trees, mostly around watercourses in Brazil. These trees will never be cut down and also provide a valuable habitat for native wildlife.
Brand spokesperson Traci Baxter said: “I’d like to thank everyone who uses Velvet tissue for supporting us by buying our products and enabling us to bring so many new trees into the world. “Our projects in Brazil teach people the value of trees. They help people make a living from managed forestry and show them they don’t need to cut down the rainforest.
