Timber workers and their families will rally in Grafton today over the Carr Government's election promise to create another 15 national parks. In the final days of the election, the timber industry is trying to increase the pressure on the Government on what it sees as a preference deal between the Labor Party and the Greens. The Forest Industry Alliance now says leaked Government documents show the new parks will cause a major wood supply shortage and force many north coast timber mills to close. The alliance says the documents also show the closures will cost the Government more than $200 million in compensation. The State Government has repeatedly said the timber industry will not be disadvantaged by the new parks and has denied it has breached the Regional Forest Agreement.
