May 07, 2007. /Lesprom Network/. Belarus won’t exceed periodic yield in order to increase export of technological wood in spite of favourable business climate at internal markets, Interfax.by reported.
“Minleskhoz will never accept excess of periodic yield for the sake of short-term gain because in the future we can lose our timber. All should be reasonably, deliberately, soundly”, forestry minister of Belarus Petr Semashko told journalists in Minsk. Meanwhile, he noted that “at western market shortage of wood is felt, especially of technological wood”.
According to Semashko, “price of pulpwood rose 1.5-2 times”. If in 2006 average price for pulpwood was $22-24 per cubic meter, at present it is $30-45 and even reaches $50. Minister also supposed that in connection with industry development and urban growth prices for natural resources including timber will grow further. Semashko added that in current year demand for sawnwood also rose by 15-20%.
“Until technological wood, pine, fir, softwood pulpwood isn’t in demand in Belarus, we will export it”, minister said. At that he noted that price growth for wood is positive for Belarus because it allows receive additional revenue. At the same time he emphasized: ” Of course, we should receive maximum of profit but we shouldn’t impoverish natural resources.”
Semashko noted that volume of Belarusian timber export have been remaining at about one level last years. Meanwhile, Semashko emphasized that after creation in Belarus of large wood-processing mills producing value-added products “all process feedstock which is exported will be returned for processing”. “It’s better to realize further processing in republic, produce value-added products and export it”, minister considers.
