Jun 22, 2006. /Lesprom Network/. Locked-out workers at the troubled Stora Enso Oyj paper mill in Cape Breton have voted to accept a do-or-die contract agreement by a narrow margin, Globe and Mail reported. The ratification came after threats from Finland's Stora Enso to close down the mill, which the company says has been losing substantial amounts of money. The workers' vote — 54% in favour — does not guarantee the mill's future, however, as the company still needs a reduction in power rates before it reopens the plant. Union leaders and the mayor of Port Hawkesbury had predicted a close result. The mill has been an economic mainstay in northern Nova Scotia over the past two decades. About 650 workers have been locked out since January.
