Jul 16, 2004. /Lesprom Network/. Indonesian parliament adopted by the majority of votes the new edition of the Forestry code introduced by the president. The adoption of the document will allow to resume a number of nickel, gold and copper extraction projects, Dow Jones reported. 131 MPs voted for, 102 – against.
The former edition of the Forestry code adopted in 1999 banned the extraction of natural resources in open shafts located near the tropical forestries which resulted in the closure of a number of extraction projects. The parliamentary majority claimed that Indonesia has already lost almost all tropical forests because of illegal felling and other negative factors, including mining activity.
The opponents claim that the introduction of the new edition will result in the drastic flow of investments into the mining industry from other sectors of economy.
