The government has reconfirmed approval for PT Toba Pulp Lestari to resume operation after lying idle since 1998 following conflict with local people over pollution and environmental damage. The company, formerly named PT Inti Indorayon Utama, however, is allowed only to resume the operation of its pulp factory. It is not allowed to operate its rayon fiber plant as it is considered to cause pollution in that area. The confirmation was given by Industry and Trade Minister Rini MS Soewandi, Labor Minister Jacob Nuwa Wea and State Minister for the Envirtonment Nabile Makarim and Forestry Minister M. Prakosa, a company spokesman Eduard Depari said yesterday. The approval to operate its pulp factory was already given by the previous government but strong protest by local people forced the company
