Jun 20, 2008. /Lesprom.com/. International Paper has completed a cleanup of hazardous waste at its paper mill in Franklin, Associated Press reported. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said that the cleanup significantly reduced risks to human health and the environment at the 3,660-acre site. Waste removed from the site included 9,519 tons of solids and tall oil, a resinous oily liquid that's a byproduct of treating pine pulp. More than 37,000 tons of soil and lime mud, a mud saturated with lime, also were removed. The cleanup was performed through the EPA's Facility Lead Program. International Paper will continue to monitor the site under the supervision of Virginia regulators.
