As reported earlier, South African papermaker, Mondi, is expanding pulp capacity at its Richards Bay mill, and the company has now ordered the new fibre line from Kvaerner Pulping. Startup is scheduled for February 2005. The EUR 65-million order is part of a $220-million project to raise capacity at the mill from 525 000 tonnes per year to 720 000 tonnes per year. Kvaerner Pulping is to supply a fibre line, including Compact Cooking technology, a washing system with two pressure diffusers and a 4-stage bleach plant comprising four Compact Press presses. The fibre line will be rated at 2 000 tonnes per day (roughly 700 000 tonnes per year) and includes the oxygen delignification plant supplied previously by Kvaerner Pulping in 2000. Besides pulp, the mill also produces white-top liner (total current capacity is 575 000 tonnes per year), but most of the new pulp capacity will not integrated at Richard Bay, as it has been earmarked for export to Europe, including to other Mondi mills. ipw
