Jan 22, 2010. /Lesprom Network/. Stora Enso had restarted a newsprint paper machine at a mill in Varkaus, Finland following a temporary shutdown due to weak demand, as Reuters agency informed Lesprom Network.
A spokeswoman said the decision was a "normal restart", but declined to comment on newsprint market conditions, saying the company could not comment ahead of its 4Q results on February 4.
Stora announced production curtailments at Varkaus last August, and said it would permanently shut the site by end-2010 unless demand picks up and pricing clearly recovers.
Varkaus has an annual production capacity of 290,000 tonnes of newsprint and directory papers, 310,000 tonnes of uncoated fine paper and 270,000 cubic metres of sawn wood. It has a staff of some 630 employees.
