Apr 11, 2011. /Lesprom Network/. Wijma, the Dutch timber trading company, has reduced operations at its Kampen sawmill with plans to expand activities in Cameroon, as TTJ reported. Managing director Ad Wesselink said the milling of African lumber had been affected primarily by lack of raw materials caused by the Gabon log export ban. The company had sought new sources, but was hampered by higher costs. The company is to cut 25 jobs out of the 115 at Wijma Kampen, while continuing the purchase and machining of other species. The three mills in Cameroon, where the company admits costs are lower, will expand the number of shifts. Tropical timber, particularly ekki, is milled for civil engineering projects, such as bridge rails, and is sold into the UK. “These changes will not affect supply by one splinter,” Mr Wesselink said.
