Jun 20, 2005. /Lesprom Network/. Amicus trade union said on Friday, 17 it will fight a plan to close the Fort William paper mill, in Corpach, with the potential loss of 126 jobs. Amicus say that they will work with the company to explore every alternative to job cuts or closure of the Fort William mill. Mill owners, ArjoWiggins, run by the Italian Fiat owning Agnelli family, are blaming the decline in the carbonless paper market on the plans to close and say the plant could close as early as September this year. Amicus regional officer, Louisa Bull, said: "This is a devastating blow to our members at the plant and to the wider community as the Fort William mill is one of the biggest employer's in the area. We are not convinced by the company's claims that alternative options to closure have been tried and we will be insisting that every possible option and alternative is explored before closure is considered." Amicus' local officer, Willy Wallace, said: "The Fort William paper mill workforce feels it has been stabbed in the back. Our members have complied with every demand made on them by the company but their promises to increase investment and diversify production at the plant have not been implemented." Amicus is meeting again with the company next Wednesday, 22 June, and is organising a mass meeting of its' members to decide the union's response on the same day. The Fort William mill was founded in 1964 and once employed 1,000 people.
