Aracruz obtains repossession of Fazenda Agril
May 04, 2006. Espirito Santo police carried out a court order to return full possession of Fazenda Agril back to Aracruz from members of the Landless Workers Movement
May 04, 2006. /Lesprom Network/. Espirito Santo police carried out on April 28, 2006 a court order to return full possession of Fazenda Agril back to Aracruz from members of the Landless Workers Movement (MST) who had invaded the rural property during the pre-dawn hours of Wednesday, April 26. This was the second time the area had been invaded by the MST. The first was on September 26, 2005, with the invaders being removed from the property on October 25, through a similar court repossession order.
As during the first invasion, Aracruz went to the courts to reestablish its full rights over its property. This is one more in a series of invasions of and demonstrations against Aracruz's property and installations carried out in the past few years by movements that demand land and protest against the activities of the Brazilian agribusiness sector and other causes. In the majority of the cases, such as this one, the attacks have been on productive land and are contrary to existing legislation. Besides the material damage to the company — which is one of the country's main producers and exporters of pulp — these acts result in damage to the environment and research that is being conducted.
Fazenda Agril is located on the border of the municipalities of Aracruz and Linhares in the state of Espirito Santo, with most of the property (78%) covered by environmental preservation areas. Containing some 8 700 hectares, a total of 6 800 hectares are set aside for environmental preservation purposes according to criteria established by the Brazilian Forestry Code and specific state legislation, including remnants of environmentally important brush lands, among the last in the region.
Aracruz Celulose is a Brazilian company, the world’s leading producer of bleached eucalyptus pulp. The company is responsible for 30% of the global supply of the product, used to manufacture printing and writing, tissue, and high value added specialty papers.
