Aug 22, 2011. /Lesprom Network/. The municipalities of Alta Floresta, Sinop and Sorriso in the northern part of the state of Mato Grosso, Brazil, are the main producers of timber from the Amazon. Exports from Alta Floresta in June 2011 totaled $2.7 million, a 52% increase over the level in June in 2010, ITTO reported. According to the Ministry of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade, in the 1Q 2011, export sales were just over $17 million, 122% up over the 1Q 2010. Tropical timber is the main export product and 1Q exports amounted to $8.1 million. Meat products are ranked second with coniferous wood products coming in third place. The United States was the main buyer of wood products from Alta Floresta ($6.3 million) followed by Hong Kong ($3.7 million), Egypt ($2 million) and Iraq ($1.2 million). The remaining exports went to 17 other countries.
