Jul 07, 2008. /Lesprom.com/. Brazil's only national newsprint producer, Norske Skog Pisa, is considering closing its sole plant in the state of Parana because it has turned unprofitable, the newspaper O Estado do Parana reported.
The report, disseminated in the U.S. by the Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas at the University of Texas at Austin, said the Brazilian plan, part of Norske Skog group in Norway, produces 180,000 tons of newsprint - or about 30% of newsprint used in the nation.
O Estado do Parana quoted a Norske Skog Pisa spokesman as saying that energy costs and the Brazilian exchange rate makes importing newsprint more attractive than producing it domestically.
