Mar 09, 2005. /Lesprom Network/. Carter Holt Harvey announced that the first appointment has been made to a new Company-sponsored teaching position at the University of Auckland. Colin Nicholas, a Structural Engineer with 36 years experience in both Britain and New Zealand will become the first Carter Holt Harvey Fellow in Wood Structures, based in the University’s Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. “We’re very pleased with Colin’s appointment,” said Hank Bier, Manager Technical Development at Carter Holt Harvey business, Futurebuild. “This is a real opportunity to add value to students’ education in designing timber in buildings.” Announced in October last year, the Carter Holt Harvey Fellows in Wood Structures established teaching positions at the University of Auckland and the University of Canterbury to enable graduate engineers and architects to learn more about the construction properties of structural timber, laminated veneer lumber and plywood. Mentored by the Carter Holt Harvey Fellows, students will also be able to conduct research into advanced wood products such as laminated veneer lumber. The University of Canterbury expects to make an appointment to its Fellowship position later in the year. The position is already attracting a large amount of international interest from high-calibre candidates. Carter Holt Harvey will contribute $50,000 a year to each University over the next three years towards the cost of the Fellowships, to a total value of $300,000.
