Oct 16, 2008. /Lesprom.com/. Continental Management Timber Processing Company, which has the controlling stock of Baikal PPP (Irkutsk region), is preparing a conservation of the enterprise, the company reports. Baikal PPP, which halted production in early October, was restarted on Wednesday in test mode to produce a trial lot of a product alternative to bleached rayon pulp which was in production earlier. Due to some technical operating features of the enterprise under conditions of closed-circuit water system, which excludes possibility of industrial wastes ingressing into Lake Baikal, bleaching was excluded from the production cycle as far as August 28. According to top executives of Continental Management, however, manufacturing new products will not solve problems of Baikal PPP. As said in their press release, giving up manufacturing of a profitable product (share of bleached rayon pulp in the total output amounted to more than 50%) led the plant to the recent financial and economic collapse: the production is halted, workers are sent on a mandatory leave, reduction of staff takes place. "To solve all the problems of the plant we need joint, coordinated actions: efforts of all plant’s shareholders, including the State, as well as efforts of local authorities and plant’s staff, focused on finding ways through the present technical and financial situation", Continental Management top executives say. "The enterprise tries to find a way through the present situation – today’s trial lot being among these attempts – but under conditions of closed water-circuit system it is not viable", says a press release of Continental Management. Baikal PPP was built in 1966 on the southern shore of Lake Baikal. 49% of its shares is on the books of Rosimushchestvo (Russian Federal Property Management Agency), 51% is owned by Continental Management Timber Processing Company LLC. In 2007, pulp production volume at Baikal PPP amounted to 190,200 tons, profits - to 85.5 million roubles ($3.25 million).
