As Danzer did not buy or import the logs, Danzer is not in a position to comment on this claim:
- According to a Greenpeace report already on April 26, 2013 they requested the Belgium authorities to check the legality of these logs. As only on June 19, 2013 these logs left Belgium it has to be assumed that the Belgium authorities could not confirm the allegations of illegality.
- Danzer is not and has never been the owner of this timber. These logs were shipped by a third party to the Czech Republic for toll manufacturing – a service where Danzer provides production capacity to third parties
- The papers provided by Greenpeace clearly document that the logs in question are not Danzer’s material.
For its own production Danzer monitors its log suppliers with a third party audited procurement system which is compliant with the EUTR. Thus Danzer logs, veneers and lumber are fully legal.
The European Timber Regulation (EUTR) makes the first importer into the European Union responsible for ensuring legality.
Danzer does not want to be associated with illegal timber and will fully cooperate with the Czech Authorities to verify the legal status of the logs.
As the respective controls of the national institutions in charge of the individual EU member countries may not yet work to full satisfaction, Danzer Bohemia Dyharna from now onwards will request from their customers third party verification for logs of African origin delivered for toll manufacturing to their plant.
Like Greenpeace Danzer fully supports that only legally harvested timber is imported into the EU.
