European newsprint demand increased 2.9% in March
Apr 27, 2010. European newsprint demand rose 2.9% (22,000 tonnes) in March 2010. Total European shipments were up 7.0% (61,000 tonnes) on the back of a 3.7% (27,000 tonnes) rise in domestic shipments and a 28.4% (32,000 tonnes) hike in exports.

The SC-Magazine paper market recorded a slight dip last month as demand declined 2.2% (8,000 tonnes). Exports of the grade were down 12.1%, but this only represents a drop of 7,000 tonnes year-onyear. Similarly, volume shipments to Europe fell 8,000 tonnes or 2.2% taking the total change in European shipments to -3.7%.
Demand for coated mechanical reels climbed 9.6% (51,000 tonnes) in March compared to the year earlier period. Total European shipments were up 10.0% (63,000 tonnes) with the strongest growth coming from domestic shipments, as well as a 12.7% (12,000 tonnes) rise in shipments overseas.
Looking at the uncoated mechanical paper sector, March saw a 6.5% (11,000 tonnes) rise in European demand. The increase in local European shipments on top of a 15.7% (5,000 tonnes) boost to exports helped to take Total European shipments to 216,000 tonnes last month, a rise of 7.8%.
