Promoted by the World Bank and The Forests Dialogue (TFD), the purpose of the meeting was to discuss the Declaration on Forest and Climate Change to stress the importance of considering the question of forests in international agreements about climate change. The Declaration is the result of a 10 month series of discussions, conducted by TFD, that brought together almost 100 representatives from the pulp and paper sector, NGOs, indigenous communities, workers unions and multilateral organizations.
The Forests Dialogue is an independent organization, made up of many stakeholders, whose objective is to promote discussion of the sustainable management of forests. Through this initiative, issues such as forestry certification, cultivation of forests, areas of high conservation value, the reduction of poverty and climate change are discussed. There are currently two members of the Managing Committee of the Dialogue from Brazil: Carlos Alberto Roxo, director of Sustainability and Corporate Relations of Aracruz, and Roberto Smeraldi, director of Friends of Earth - the Amazon.
