Aug 04, 2004. /Lesprom Network/. Irkutsk region reduced the number of timber export offices from 200 to 40, Irkutsk regional administration spokesperson told Lesprom.ru. The following measures followed in order to boost control over timber exports, mainly to China. Permanent customs offices are being established on all major railway stations along the Trans-Siberian railroad, with 5 customs offices operating in Irkutsk. The customs officers check the timber origin documentation, stick barcode stickers on each logs, containing the information about the place of felling, species, diameter and length. Then the timber is sent to the recipient. Irkutsk region produces more than 20 million cub m of timber/yr, almost half of raw timber is exported abroad. Meanwhile the data indicated by the exporter in the declaration does not necessarily correspond with the real amount of timber exported. According to local customs officials, 80% of violations are those registered in timber exports.
