Between the 11th and 21st of June, Klabin is having its annual shutdown at the Monte Alegre plant, a compulsory procedure during which papermaking operations are suspended. The purpose is to ensure proper functioning and operational continuity of the mill, by conducting maintenance with quality and safety. The annual shutdown is a normal procedure in the pulp and paper sector and occurs every year in the company’s plants, as the company said in a press release received by Lesprom Network. During the 11 days of maintenance activities, 85 contractors and around 3,200 temporary workers will be involved in the activities of the plant’s annual shutdown. The main activities programmed for preventive maintenance include inspections of boilers, digestors, systems for generation and distribution of energy and controls of the production process. This contingent of workers requires logistics and infrastructure which entail transportation, lodging and meals among other items, all of which help to mobilize the economy of the town of Telemaco Borba. Added to these are other benefits such as the taxes generated for the municipality and extra movement in hotels, bars, restaurants and stores as well as support services for the workers’ stay in the town. An internal campaign was planned in the installations of the mill to make all the workers aware of the safety issues, quality of the services and organization. Furthermore, the authorities of the region were sent a communication informing them about the actions foreseen for this Shutdown. During the days of the shutdown variations in odor and noise coming from the mill, especially during the start-up operation of equipment, may be noticed by the community. It is important to point out that these alterations cause no harm to the health of people or to the environment. Klabin is a 113 year-old Brazilian company and the biggest producer and exporter of paper in the country and the largest paper recycler in Latin America. It is the leading manufacturer of packaging paper and board, corrugated boxes and industrial sacks and also sells timber in logs. It has 15 industrial plants in Brazil and one in Argentina.
