Jan 21, 2011. /Lesprom Network/. Northern Pulp will be receiving $28.1 million through the federal government’s Pulp and Paper Green Transformation Program, as ForestTalk reported. Northern Pulp plans to use the federal investment, along with their own capital program, to move forward with 3 clean-tech projects. - Odour Emissions – Construction will begin this summer on a project that will reduce the odour emissions from the mill at Abercrombie Point by at least 70%. This will have a drastic impact on the community of Pictou and Pictou County – both for its residents and visitors. This project is expected to be complete by the end of this year. - Boiler Upgrades – Upgrades to the mill’s boiler will make it cleaner and more efficient. This will improve the mill’s operational efficiencies and environmental performance. Project completion is scheduled for the end of 2011. - Increase Renewable Energy – Northern Pulp plans to increase production of renewable energy from black liquor solids. Project completion is scheduled for the end of 2011. While Northern Pulp’s core business is pulp and paper, the company is also a renewable energy company. The company has generated its own electricity since 1967 and hopes to be a bigger contributor to Nova Scotia’s green energy transformation in the future.
