Oct 09, 2008. /Lesprom.com/. Poland's paper maker Mondi Swiecie, a unit of the South African paper producer Mondi, will seek higher carbon dioxide permits, Reuters reported.
Maciej Kunda, chief executive of Mondi Swiecie said that the company's ongoing Euro 305 million investment will boost its production capacity by 55 %, significantly raising its electricity consumption and appetite for carbon dioxide (CO2) permits.
The paper maker on its own produces about half of the electricity it uses.
Mondi received an annual CO2 quota of 318 thousand tonnes for 2008-2012, less than a half of the 710 thousand tonnes it enjoyed earlier, and now hopes to receive additional permits from Poland's yet unallocated reserve.
KASHUE, a body repsonsible for permits distribution has not yet allocated the reserve due to lack of necessary legislation.
Poland is obliged to cut its greenhouse gas emissions under the European Union's emissions trading scheme -- the bloc's main tool to curb global warming - and was assigned a quota of 208.5 million tonnes annually for 2008-2012.
Out of the 208.5 million tonnes limit, the paper industry received 1.4 million, while about 7.4 million tonnes are earmarked as a reserve.
