May 24, 2005. /Lesprom Network/. Russian recycle paper collection index is 12%, lower than the average European (57%) and US (50%) indices, according to the article titled ‘Paper reincarnation’ published in the current issue of Forest Industry magazine.
According to the article, Russia is accumulting 3 million tons of recycle paper, while only 800 thousand tons are being collected and the remaining amount is dumped. Russian consumption of recycle paper is 650 thousand tons, exports – 150 thousand tons. Russian recycle paper is supplied to Moldova, Ukraine, Byelorussia, Kazakhstan and China.
World recycle paper consumption in 2005-2007 is expected to increase 19 million tons due to the increase in paper and cardboard production in Europe and Asia. The most significant increase will be witnessed in China – around 6 million tons in spite of the fact that China is the world’s largest importer of recycle paper.
USA is the main supplier of recycle paper to China. According to the US Department of Commerce, exports of recycle paper increased 2.6% to 12.8 million tons in 2004 compared to 2003. Meanwhile the consumption of recycled paper in the US is declining. In 2000 the consumption index was 75%, in 2004 – 50%. The decline is due to the reduction in rubbish collection, the magazine pointed out.
