May 28, 2011. /Lesprom Network/. SCA Timber is bringing together the two sawmills Munksund in Piteå and Holmsund in Umeå, Sweden, into one organisation with a common management. Holmsund sawmill will be specialised in processing sawlogs of small dimensions and Munksund will process the larger logs, as the company said in a press release received by Lesprom Network. Both Holmsund and Munksund sawmills produce pine wood products. Holmsund sawmill will maintain its production of 90,000 cubic metres of sawn products per annum, but will process more logs than today. Munksund sawmill has a production of 430,000 cubic metres of sawn products per annum. This will be maintained, but the focus will be shifted to products from larger log dimensions. SCA Timber has started negotiations with the trade unions on the proposed changes, which will result in a reduction of the workforce by 20, mostly in Munksund where a night shift will be discontinued. In Holmsund the change will result in loss of 2-3 management positions. The workforce at Holmsund sawmill is presently 50 employees and contractors and at Munksund sawmill 120. “Productive and cost efficient sawmills constitute one key component in competitiveness. By specialising our sawmills, we can use both facilities in a better way. We will also be able to better utilese the wood raw material in the region”, says Anders Nilsson, manager of Munksund sawmill and proposed manager for the joint sawmill organisation.
