Dec 20, 2010. /Lesprom Network/. The board of directors for Comfor Management Services Ltd. (CMSL) plans to close Sheraton Holdings Ltd.’s sawmill in British Columbia, Canada, as ForestTalk reported.
Quinten Beach, President of both CMSL and Sheraton Holdings Ltd., said the community-owned sawmill company has terminated one of its two remaining employees and advised its customers that it will not be able to deliver any forest products for the foreseeable future.
Beach attributed the closure on continued poor demand for Sheraton’s primary products, railway ties and timbers. He said the complete shutdown was necessary to limit Sheraton’s losses during this period of economic downturn.
“The market for Sheraton’s traditional products all but collapsed when the economic meltdown occurred, and those markets are yet to recover,” Beach said. “While Sheraton has developed new product lines in an effort to bridge this downturn, the profit margin associated with those products – and the demand for them – is not yet adequate to meet the company’s monthly operating expenses. Consequently, in an effort to conserve the company’s financial resources, our board has decided to completely cease operations.”
Beach said that Henry Wiebe will remain as manager of Sheraton Holdings Ltd. for the foreseeable future. CMSL’s board of directors will discuss the long-term future of Sheraton Holdings Ltd. over the next few months.
“Sheraton Holdings Ltd. has historically been a very successful company,” he noted. “However, like most companies in the forest industry, the recession has hit the company very hard. Closing the company wasn’t an easy decision to make, but it is the financially responsible thing to do at this time.”
CMSL purchased Sheraton Holdings Ltd. in March 2008.
In August, the company laid off all but two of its employees.
