Jan 18, 2010. /Lesprom Network/. Smurfit-Stone Container Corp. plans to close four more plants and eliminate 600 more workers in 2010, San Francisco Business Times reported.
The company, which expects to exit from Chapter 11 bankruptcy in April, had already reduced its headcount by 2,185 in 2009. But Smurfit-Stone plans to cut another 600 positions, leaving a total of 18,500 workers. Included in the plant closures are mills in Ontonagon, Mich., and Missoula, Mont., which the company said in December that it was closing.
Smurfit-Stone also said that it saved $13 million by renegotiating its lease for its corporate office in Creve Coeur, Mo.
Smurfit-Stone filed for bankruptcy a year ago in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Wilmington, Del.
