Apr 19, 2005. /Lesprom Network/. In mid 2004, Stora Enso North America embarked on a program to utilize EnVINTA's One-2-Five(R) Energy process with its 7 North American mill sites to bring consistency to business practices for energy across the group. Stora Enso North America is an integrated paper, packaging and forest products company, and is a global leader in publication and fine papers, packaging boards and wood products. Stora Enso sales exceed $16.0 billion annually and employs over 45,000 people in more than 40 countries and 5 continents. Stora Enso is committed to sustainability and managing its use of energy resources. In all of the countries where the group operates, attempts are being made to reduce the use of fossil fuels to reduce Greenhouse Gas emissions. Tom Scharff, director of Power and Energy for Stora Enso North America, stated that, "As Stora Enso has become more focused on energy use and our level of Greenhouse emissions, we were looking for an approach that could bring all mills to a common level of management practices for energy. The One-2-Five program ranks the business practices of each site objectively, benchmarks the sites against each other as well as over the wider paper industry, and helps to focus each site on their critical actions to improve. It also allows us to regularly track how effectively each site is implementing the action plans developed from the diagnostics. We have been implementing the diagnostic sessions in cooperation with our mill's local utilities, Minnesota Power, WE-Energies, and Wisconsin Public Service, as well as Shell Global Solutions." One-2-Five is the global standard process for larger energy using companies to evaluate existing business practices for energy, and implementing effective continuous improvement management programs. It is the quality system for energy. Energy business practices for 1300 sites are benchmarked on the One-2-Five information base. The One-2-Five sessions show that Stora Enso mills score significantly above average as compared to the North American paper industry, but at the same time defined areas where improvements were possible. Stora Enso is taking the recommendations seriously, and is acting to bring the mills to a consistent 4 star rating during the next year. This would put them among the top 2% of industrial sites evaluated globally.
