Tasmania's forestry industry bracing for lean times

Jan 29, 2008. /Lesprom Network/. The Forestry Industry Association agrees with a report which claims parts of Tasmania's forestry industry will face lean times and will have to shed jobs, even if the Gunns pulp mill is built, informed Australian broadcasting corporation.
It also claims increased global competition will make it hard for Tasmanian woodchips to be sold to emerging markets, and calls for a cut in the number of logging contractors.
The Chief Executive of the Association Terry Edwards agrees some job losses will help the industry remain sustainable.
"The number of forest contractors in Tasmania was established at a time when exports of woodchips were at their peak and now that they have fallen somewhat, the need for the number of contractors we have has diminished," Terry Edwards said.
