UK timber imports up 1.2% in 2003

According to the report, the total square occupied by forests in the UK was 2.713 million hectares by March, 31 2004, including: England – 1.115 million hectares, Wales – 285 thousand hectares, Scotland – 1.330 million hectares.

According to the report, the total square occupied by forests in the UK was 2.713 million hectares by March, 31 2004, including: England – 1.115 million hectares, Wales – 285 thousand hectares, Scotland – 1.330 million hectares.
In 2003 UK timber-processing enterprises received 7.57 million cub m of timber from the national timber resources in 2003, up 4% compared with the prior period in 2002, including softwood timber supplies – 4.24 million cub m, hardwood timber – 120 thousand cub m.
In 2003 timber imports to the UK increased 1.2% to 49.7 million cub m in 2003 compared with the prior period in 2002. Imported raw materials were distributed by sectors as follows: timber-processing up 9% to 19.7 million cub m, pulp production – down 6% to 6.8 million cub m, board and veneer production – down 4% to 8.0 thousand cub m, paper and cardboard – down 2% to 15.2 million cub m. In 2003 UK timber exports declined 2% to 12.6 million cub m in 2003 compared with the prior period in 2002.
