In the first eight months of this year, 8,400 cubic meters of veneer were exported from Latvia, 14.3% less than in the respective period of 2004, agriculture ministry's forests department informed. Latvia's veneer export in the first eight months of 2004 totaled 8 800 cubic meters. The total value of veneer exported in the first eight months of this year was LVL 5.11 million ($8.7 million), 17.8% down from the respective period last year (LVL 6.22 million/$10.5 million). Veneer import in the first eight months decreased 33%, to 600 cubic meters. As reported, according to the state forest service, strong winds in Latvia this past January damaged at least 7.3 million cubic meters of wood and caused a deficit of quality wood.
