Kingfisher’s responsible timber sourcing rate reaches 86%

Jun 29, 2012. /Lesprom Network/. B&Q owner Kingfisher plc said 86% of group timber products sold (by volume) during 2011-12 were responsibly sourced, as TTJ reported.
The company’s newly-published corporate responsibility report also says the group (including UK, French, Spanish and Turkish operations) sold a volume of 7.1 million cubic metres roundwood equivalent during the year – comparable to a forest area the size of Switzerland.
More than 50% of its products were FSC-certified, while other sources include PEFC, The Forest Trust, Rainforest Alliance and WWF Global Forest Trade Network.
B&Q already has a 100% responsible timber sourcing record and Kingfisher wants to replicate that success throughout its group – including Castorama and Brico Depot in France, Koctas in Turkey and Brico Depot in Spain.
Kingfisher’s Net Positive sustainability ambition aims to achieve a 100% rate across the group by 2020. Kingfisher said it plans to be involved in a series of local forest projects designed to support national timber sectors and reduce carbon miles associated with imported product.
Meanwhile, the company said it is still deciding what to do with plywood stocks it removed from sale earlier this year. The FSC-marked stocks had been flagged up in a Daily Mail story, as the certification had been withdrawn for a non-compliance issue after B&Q bought the stocks.
“At this stage, options on what to do with the affected stock are being considered, which exclude putting it back on sale or into landfill,” said the report.
B&Q said all the available evidence suggested that, despite the FSC certification withdrawal, the product was sourced from legal forest concessions.
