MOSCOW, Feb 28 /Prime-TASS/ -- Russia and Finland have good prospects for boosting bilateral ties within the development of Russia-EU cooperation, Russian President Vladimir Putin said during his meeting with visiting Finnish Prime Minister Paavo Lipponen Thursday. "We have promising large-scale projects, some of which could be called multi-national and are of interest to Russia, Finland, and the EU," Putin was quoted by ITAR-TASS news agency as saying. Russia and Finland have been cooperating in such areas as the energy, telecommunications, timber industries, paper production and many others. Russian gas giant Gazprom, Finland's energy giant Fortum, Germany's Ruhrgas and Wintershall are considering the construction of an underwater gas pipeline across the Baltic Sea to ship Russian gas to Europe. The project is expected to become part of the Russian-EU energy dialogue, aimed at ensuring stable supplies of Russian energy resources to Europe. The trade turnover between Russia and Finland amounted to $6 billion in 2001, Putin said but did not elaborate. Putin also said that he plans to meet with Finnish President Tarja Halonen this spring, adding that the exact date of the meeting would be set later.
