Timber enterprises owned by Segezhsky pulp and paper enterprise (Karelia Republic, Russia) stopped timber production due to forest fires: Segezhales stopped timber production 100%, Padany – 70%. Currently forest rentors are responsible for fire extinguishing. 14 blazes were registered on the territory rented by Segezhsky, of which 11 were extinguished, 2 were localized. 340 hectares of forest were affected by forest fires. The major part of forest fires were extinguished with the efforts of Segezhsky, Segezhales and Padany. The enterprises directed their staff and equipment for fire extinguishing. However all of the 14 fires arose on the territories remote from timber production facilities. According to the official press-release, the fires were caused by the local residents. Segezhsky spends a total of RUR 4.5 million to support Segezhskaya fire brigade. In 2005 Karelia Republic will get RUR 9 million for fire extinguishing.
