May 30, 2008. /Lesprom.com/. Indonesia is set to see a major tree-planting drive, with the news that West Sumatra has plans to plant millions of new trees this year. The move, which is done with climate change in mind, will see 2 million trees planted in total in the region. Marking a major increase on the levels reached last year, when 1.2 million trees were planted, forestry service head Syahrial Syam told Antara News more would be done in the coming years. With barren areas targeted this year, next year will see a further 2.5 million trees planted in arid areas and school yards. Indonesia has reportedly planted more than 80 million trees as part of its efforts to combat global warming, while the wider timber industry is continuing to see prices go up. The forestry industry has become entwined with the fight against global warming, with the availability of land often dependent on certain criteria designed to protect trees.
